Welcome to the review off:

Karakai Jozu no Takagi-san
Synonyms: Skilled Teaser Takagi San

Synopsis

“If you blush, you lose.”

Living by this principle, the middle schooler Nishikata gets constantly made fun of by his seat neighbor Takagi-san. With his pride shattered to pieces, he vows to turn the tables and get back at her some day. And so, he attempts to tease her day after day, only to find himself victim to Takagi-san’s ridicule again sooner than later. Will he be able to make Takagi-san blush from embarrassment even once in the end?

VA: Kaji Yuki

My thoughts:

This sweet little anime manages to be really cute and refreshing without being completely boring and over bearing. I was able to watch this in a single sitting. I absolutely love the way Takagi San always had the upper hand to lead Nishikata to believing he was in control at times. Middle school girls terribly frightening.

Animation:
The animation was some, clean and did exactly what it was intended to do. It never pretended to be something it wasn’t never was over animated and it never sacrificed in being a role player in the story telling.

Character Design:
Always in control Takagi San and the always fumbling Nishikata were well designed.  The characters are strong to their own design and keep developing further around each other.

Music:
The music was not over bearing, adding subtle tones and runs that are indicative of each character. It’s a sweet sound that finds its range in minor chords which makes your heart want for more story.

Story/Plot:
This is one of the better school romances, an innocent beginning to a greater story. I know that I would love to see a second season or rather how their story plays out.
That being said Karakai Jozu no Takagi San give us an brilliant in sight into the beginning of a love story without the anime cliché we see every season, and all the while the story never gets old or tiresome.

But even while being teased so much, the seemingly oblivious Nishikata can sometimes get in a critical hit against Takagi-san.

My scores:

Animation: 8
Artwork/Environment: 7
Character Design: 8
Story/Plot : 8
Music: 8
Voice Acting: 9

Overall rating:

So why watch this anime?
I think it’s a unique story with a unique spin on the over done school romance. It had me in stitches so much so that my stomach hurt from laughing so hard at times. It shows the awkwardness and foolishness of young romance. But I do think that the manga goes at a better pace than compared to the anime.

  • Takagi and Nishikata reimagined as high schoolers.
